Second weekend in Addis (Liad)

Hey all!

After a very long and productive week, we have our first Day Off today. No alarms..No 6 am awakenings..just some good old sleep.
Mind you we didn't get up that late. We have still much to explore in Addis while we are here..

I feel like I am really starting to understand more about the Ehiopian people and their culture. We have seen many patients and their families and through that we got a lot of insight into the way people go abouts their lives here.

Crazy thing happenned last night. A bunch of us went out for dinner at a local restaurant and when we were finished a guy came up to us. He recognized Will, Liora and me. His sister came to Israel for surgery with Sach and he came with her for follow up a few days ago. I actually interviewed her and I can say that she is a very sweet and driven 16 year old girl. So he came up to thank us for our work and all that he asked is that we look after her. What an experience..

Will and I started this morning with a really good breakfast at Geneve cafe (a local coffee house not far from our hotel). We had some Fatira (flat, crispy pastry kind of thing) with egg and honey - best one we had yet! And to that some of their amazing coffee (Will) and A Mango-Avocado drink (for me). It was a very nice and energizing start to the day and off we went by minibus to Siru Meda (a local fabric market) to walk around for a bit..
So far it has been a very relaxing day (and I think we all needed some of that).

Liora wanted to sepnd some time with her sister (Shira) and Yulia (her friend)before they leave to go back to Israel. So they went for a nice breakfast and to the "Red terror" museum and we will probably get together later tonight.

We have a full week ahead of us (with Dr. Etsegenet and Dr. Rahel). Not sure how many patients we will see this week but I am pretty sure it will be packed..YAY!
This has been quite the experience so far.

Happy Valentine's day!

Love and kisses to all
from all of us here at the wonderful Taitu hotel

  3. Sounds like this will be one of the most rewarding experiences in your lives. Your perpectives on your lives back home must be changeing dramatically. Perhaps a gratitude journal would be worth-while. Reading your blog is one of the highlights of our day!
    Stay safe and healthy.
